While there’s often an anti-Danny Boy snobbery seen amongst 'real Irish musicians' I will say that our old Irish priest, a fluent Irish speaker, and a fine singer with a beautiful voice, loved Danny Boy and would sing it whenever he had the opportunity. Not that opportunities were hard to come by- he always had a song, a tale, or a joke ready for anyone who would listen. (He had an endless supply of truly hilarious jokes just naughty enough, but not too naughty for a priest to tell, plus a supply of good ones suitable for telling during the homily.)As somebody who gets paid to play at weddings and funerals I get asked to play Danny Boy all the time.

It’s perfectly suited for the uilleann pipes. My approach when asked to play prelude/preservice music is to rotate through what seems to me as the three main categories of 'Irish song'1) sean nos airs2) Irish-American tin pan alley songs3) 'Irish folk music' songs/pub songs. In this way I 'play to' the various members of the audience.I don’t think I’ve ever encountered an Irish priest who didn’t love to hear Fields of Athenry! Or an American of Irish ancestry who didn’t love to hear Danny Boy.Postedby6 years ago.Re: Danny Boy. Pay me enough and I’ll play anything. I once got tipped $200 at a ITM gig by some college kids who pooled their money and asked for 'House at Pooh Corner'. I waited ‘til the rest of the band took a break and had ‘em in tears and grins.

Usually we’re asked to play 'Danny Boy' by the local Celtic and Hibernian Club and there’s usually some club member who insists on being the one to sing it. The fun part is when their voice can’t handle it in C or D and you get to transpose on the fly. All in all, the tune (and the playing of it) is no different than 'A Mother’s Love’s a Blessing' and 'Rose of Tralee'. It’s only a chore when you make it one.Postedby6 years ago.Re: Danny Boy.

I was playing in a mostly Irish group at about 2 AM on a very foggy night. So foggy I almost got lost walking the block across the camp grounds to get to it. We were playing some Irish song or another when a voice came out of the fog singing the songand very well. By the end he’d found us. We commented on his nice singing and he asked if we would do Danny Boy. There was a sort of hesitation and then we asked key. It was absolutely wonderful.

He had no trouble and sang the song as it should be sung. In the fog at 2 AM is was magic. He thanked us for allowing him to sing and disappeared into the fog. I have no idea who he was but I try to remember that moment when someone decides to murder that song.Postedby6 years ago.Re: Danny Boy. Personally, and to vaguely paraphrase Oscar Wilde (an Irishman,) I find myself incapable of listening to the lyrics to 'Danny Boy' without being moved to laughter.
